Hip fracture treatment in Hyderabad | Dr. Vasudeva Juvvadi
A hip fracture may result after a severe fall or trauma. A hip fracture causes severe hip pain and abnormal positioning of the hip and leg. Your orthopedic doctor can diagnose hip fracture based on the symptoms and movement difficulty and position of the hip and leg. Your doctor confirms your hip fracture by ordering an X-ray. The location of the hip fracture can also be identified with X-rays.
Hairline fractures can not be seen in an X-ray film. Therefore, if a hip fracture doesn’t show up in an X-ray, your orthopedic doctor may order an MRI or a bone scan to look for a hairline fracture.
The following are the two regions on the long hip bone (femur). The femur is prone to fractures in these two regions:
The femoral neck: This part of the femur is just below the ball-and-socket joint. A hip fracture most commonly occurs in this region.
The intertrochanteric region is further down from the femoral neck in the part of the upper femur. Hip fractures commonly occur in this region as well.
Diagnosis of Hip Fractures
Once a patient with a hip fracture reaches a hospital’s emergency room, an orthopedic surgeon makes a note of the history and injury. The doctor also checks the movement, sensation, and strength of the lower leg. The injured leg may appear rotated, twisted, or shorter than the other leg. The orthopedic doctor will order an X-ray to diagnose the hip fracture. To look into the minute details of the soft structures of the hip joint and bone, the doctor may also order MRI scans. It is a very sensitive scan. For a detailed cross-sectional image of the hip joint, an orthopedic doctor may also order a CT scan.
Hip Fracture Treatment in Hyderabad – Surgery
One should treat hip fractures as early as possible to lower the risk of complications. Only a very small percentage of nondisplaced hip fractures are not treated surgically. Otherwise, almost all hip fractures are treated surgically. There are several factors that determine the outcome of the treatment. For instance, the type and location of the fracture and age of the patient.
Nondisplaced femoral neck fractures: in-situ pinning is the most common treatment for this type of fracture. Pinning prevents the femoral head from dislodging or slipping off of the femoral neck.
Internal repair using screws: It is done using metal screws. An orthopedic surgeon holds bone together using screws while the fracture heals. A metal plate is also used to fix bone with screws.
Intertrochanteric hip fractures are treated surgically using screws, a side plate, or an intramedullary nail.
A subtrochanteric fracture occurs in the upper part of the femur just below the hip joint. The fracture is fixed by using a nail and screw. To stabilize the bone from rotating around interlocking screws are used.
Femoral head fractures are rare: nondisplaced fractures are treated nonsurgically with limited weight-bearing. In young persons with a large fragment, open reduction and fixation with screws are done
Displaced fractures of the femoral neck are treated with HIP REPLACEMENT – especially in older people.
Partial Hip Replacement
In a partial hip replacement, the hip joint’s socket is not replaced. Only the ball of the hip joint is replaced.
Total Hip Replacement
In this type of hip replacement, both the upper part of the hip joint in the pelvic bone and the upper femur is replaced with an artificial hip joint (prostheses). Total hip replacement is more cost-effective and the outcomes are quite promising with better long-term prospects.
Rehabilitation – Physical and Occupational Therapy
Rehabilitation after hip surgery is quite indispensable for regaining mobility and strength. Physical therapists assist and train their patients in a wide range of motions and strengthening exercises. Their exercises depend on the type of surgery the patient has undergone. They also support their patients by providing home-based training sessions. An occupational therapist helps teach their patient some techniques that help them become independent in their daily activities – using as tying a shoelace, using the toilet, dressing, undressing, bathing, cooking, and so on.
